Continuous Vertical Conveyor Guarding: Steel Enclosures and Mesh Protection
X-YES ENGINEERING TEAM · 4 MIN READ
EDITOR’S NOTE
A continuous vertical conveyor contains chains, shafts, bearings and other moving components. Different parts of the machine require different types of protection. On X-YES conveyors, rotating components are enclosed with steel plates, while the main conveying area normally uses mesh panels. This article explains the reason behind this arrangement.
Steel Plates Around Rotating Components

The areas around shafts, bearings, bearing housings and other rotating components are enclosed with steel plates.
The main reason is to prevent access to moving mechanical parts during normal operation.
These components are located inside the machine frame, but some of them are close enough to accessible areas that additional protection is required. Instead of leaving the rotating parts exposed, we enclose them with a rigid steel cover.
The exact shape of the enclosure depends on the position and movement of the component.
This is different from simply enclosing the entire machine. The protection is designed around the parts that actually require it.
Why Use Mesh for the Main Conveyor Area?

The main conveying section normally uses mesh guarding.
Here, the mesh has two practical functions.
First, it helps prevent products or other objects from falling out of the conveyor.
Second, it allows the operator to see the material moving inside the machine.
This visibility is useful during both commissioning and normal production.
An operator can see whether the carriers are moving normally, whether products are being transferred correctly and whether there is an obvious blockage inside the machine.
Why Is Visibility Important?
A continuous conveyor is normally connected to other conveyors or production equipment. When the system is running, operators need to know what is happening inside the vertical section.
With mesh guarding, several conditions can be checked visually without opening the machine:
| What can be observed | What it tells the operator |
|---|---|
| Product movement | Whether conveying is running normally |
| Empty carrier | Whether a carrier is available |
| Product accumulation | Whether the discharge side may be blocked |
| Product falling from a carrier | Possible product or carrier problem |
| Irregular movement | Possible interruption or mechanical issue |
This does not replace sensors or the control system. Sensors are still used for detection and machine control.
The mesh simply gives the operator direct visibility of the conveying process.

Why Not Enclose Everything With Steel Plate?
A full steel enclosure would provide a solid barrier, but it would also hide the conveying process.
If the operator cannot see inside, a simple problem such as an empty carrier, product accumulation or a fallen product may require opening an access panel before it can be identified.
Mesh avoids this unnecessary step in areas where full steel enclosure is not required.
The result is a practical balance between protection and visibility.
Guarding Is Designed According to the Machine
The guarding arrangement is not necessarily identical on every continuous vertical conveyor.
The location of the drive system, shafts, bearings, chains, transfer points and other moving components determines where solid protection is required.
A typical arrangement is:
| Area | Protection | Main purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Shafts and bearing areas | Steel plate | Prevent access to rotating components |
| Drive and other exposed moving parts | Enclosed protection | Reduce contact risk |
| Main conveying section | Mesh panel | Product retention and visibility |
| Transfer areas | Guarding according to layout | Protect the operator and equipment |
The final design depends on the machine configuration and installation conditions.
Protection Without Losing Visibility

The purpose of guarding is not simply to cover the machine.
A good guarding arrangement needs to protect people from moving components while still allowing operators and maintenance personnel to understand what is happening inside the equipment.
That is why we do not use the same material everywhere.
Steel plates are used where solid protection is needed. Mesh is used where protection and visibility can be provided together.
